Windows XP / selective startup mode

I have some Sierra genealogy software with known problems when used
with Windows XP. On a genealogy web-site group, it was suggested to
use "selective startup mode, disable systray, and all will work well".
I'm afraid I haven't a clue how to do this ... anyone out there know
about this?

This is just basic troubleshooting stuff.
Get to the RUN box ( START / Run)
and type msconfig. Press enter.
Look at the startup tab, and if you see systray, deselect it.
OK out and restart the PC.

Start>Run type "msconfig" without the quotes, go to the Startup tab and
uncheck items you don't want to appear. Although it is a very good idea
to not have extraneous programs running in the background, I think it
very unlikely that systray is causing your problems. Try running the
program under "Compatibility Mode" (look in Help & Support for
instructions). Otherwise, consider keeping an older computer around to
run your software, or upgrade to a program designed to run on Windows
XP.

they are offering a solution that *might* apply in Win98/ME (though I
doubt it) but has no equivalent in XP.

Nearest would be to disable everything in the Startup section at a run
of MSConfig.exe by unchecking 'Load startup items' on the front page,
but that is pretty heavy handed.
