Windows Xp Runs then stops and dark screen appears

Windows Xp Home Runs then stops and dark screen appears. It appears to crash
as its a dark screen with a mouse pointer showing. Please help me get it to
boot. I tried to repair installation and its no help.
 
Carl have you tried "f8" when it boots up and safe mode ? if not try it and see

Had the same thing last week. Had to reinstall windows. Bought a full
version disc. changed bios to boot from disc and reinstalled.
