Windows XP Restore

Please Help!!!!!

I tried to install sp2 and it failed. The removel of service pack 2
started, but computer went down before it could finish. When I tried to
reboot I got and error message that could not load Ntfs.sys. I went to the
recovery console and did "ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old. Then did copy
d:\i386\ntfs.sys c:\windows\system32\drivers. After doing this my system
starts to load the Windows XP Professional screen the gets in reboot loop.

Next I put in XP CD and tried to do a repair. During this I get about 50
occcurances of "Setup cannot copy file: hid.dll,drprov.dll.dvavclnt.dll
etc.... I suspected that these file are corrupt and tried to delete or
rename them but could not.

1. How can I recover from this without a fresh install or..
2. How can I get to My Documents folder to save a very importand excel
spreedsheet before I do a complete reload.

note: I do not have an ERD.

First recover your data. Two options. One is to put the drive in
another XP or Win2k computer as a slave drive and read the data off the
drive. The second is to get a linux distro called Knoppix. That will
create a bootable CD from an .iso file. It has a backup function that
will allow you to backup the files to CD. Don't try writing to the
drive from within Linux though.

After that do a fresh install of XP using a slipstreamed SP2 disk.
Here's one way to create slipstreamed XP install disk for SP2:

Try this. Boot into the recovery console using your XP setup disk. At
the command prompt, see if you show a copy of the file ntfs.sys in a
folder called c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386. If you do, go to
c:\windows\system32\drivers and rename the file ntfs.sys to ntfs.old.
Then, copy the ntfs.sys file from c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 to
the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder. Now, try your boot again and
be patient. It may try to boot as many as three times before it comes
up successfully. Just let it do its thing (technical term).
