.
Goto Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
and scroll down to the System Restore service, click on
it and set it to Automatic and then click to start the
service. If the service has been turned off then you
won't be able to restore any previous points but will be
able to use it in the future. Note that this service
depends on the Remote Procedure Call service so make sure
that that also is set to automatic and is started. You
might then be able to hit F8 at startup and try the
restore to settings that previously worked option. Not a
bad idea to also run checkdisk. Click on My Computer,
then rightclick on the drive that needs fixing and click
on the Properties tab. Click on the Tools tab and the
Error-checking 'Check Now' box and make sure both boxes
are selected. It will tell you it can't run and ask you
to run it next time you start your computer. Close the
windows and restart your computer. Try doing this
several times and see if it helps.

That happens to me continually and I've never received a
satisfactory answer from MS. I sure would like to resolve
this issue because I run a virus scan every morning.
And, whenever I need to go back to a Restore Point,
Windows tells that it is unable to restore. I've done
everything I've ever heard of but nothing works. The
first thing MS says is to increase your restore point
space, but mine is set at max & it doesn't help. When I
get some answers that make sense, I'll be sure to let you
know.

Cobrablues,

SR is a nice feature, but doesn’t work very well – it’s just the way it is.
Just like Active Desktop, Hibernation, etc.
So, don’t count on it very much.

In fact, System Restore works very well. Users have problems with it
primarily for two reasons:

1. They don't understand its purpose: Uninformed users think that System
Restore is supposed to fix their problems. Wrong. System Restore provides
users with the opportunity to fix their problems. The goal of System Restore
is to restore the essential underpinnings of Windows to a known good state,
to give the user access to the GUI. From the GUI users can make use of
Windows' many troubleshooting resources.

Other users think that System Restore backs up their documents and programs.

2. Users who don't know how to keep viruses or malware off their computers
end up with corrupted restore points. Once a restore point is corrupted,
System Restore is of no use.

Were it not for System Restore, users would, in many cases, have no other
recourse for fixing their systems except for the Recovery Console, which is
beyond the ability of many if not most users.

I came accross the same problem last night with system restore. I installed a
Windows update (KB883357) and later when I went to Microsoft's update site
again I was getting an error: 0x8024400A. So I tried a restore the last
restore point, restarted and couldn't restore. So I ended up unistalling the
update though "add/remove" programs (which worked about as well) and didn't
recieve that error anymore. I thought about contacting MS about it, but I
said "nah" I won't worry about it. Although I do have to agree with Ted
Zieglar, "S-R" isn't everything, I've used it once on this PC to fix an
issue...it fixed it fine, but it caused the sound driver and another program
to not work right. So I had to reinstall those things. System Restore is like
one of those things where it fixes one problem, causes five more. lol.

I have put this reply in another discussion group section so I will add it
here as well.

My computer is a Compaq Presario which is the same as HP and HP provide a
software download which has to be installed prior to SP2 being installed
otherwise system restore fails to operate in the future. Although HP provide
the download I have a sneaky suspicion it comes from Microsoft so they must
be aware of this.

Any downloads for Windows should come from Microsoft regardless of the brand
of the PC. My PC is a custom built job running a retail version of Windows XP
(retail meaning: It was a box version that you'd get at any discount
superstore) About that needing certain software prior to downloading SP2... I
know that before you install SP2 you need pretty much every single important
update, otherwise you'll find you're self having to reinstall windows. (this
happened to someone I know) Also, don't trust the "express install" that
windows offers on their update site...stick with the "custom install" (that
same person I know, got screwed using the express install) Actually I'd stay
away from SP2 all together for the time being, but that's what Johnny would
do. Finally just incase you don't have the link for the offical MS Windows
update site...here it is
