Windows XP Repair/Install option question

When doing a repair/install using the Windows XP CDROM is it necessary to
match the service pack version? Presumably it would not be a good idea to
use an older version of the OS, but would it be OK to use a newer version.
IOW, if the installed OS is XP SP1 would it be safe to use XP SP2 media to
do the repair and apply service pack 2 in the process?

I think you will find that Windows will only allow a repair with a CD that
has the same exact service pack as the installed OS. You could search the
web for "Slipstream" to see how to include SP2 on an XP disk. However, the
process is more than a bit dangerous - be very sure to backup first.
