Windows XP Remote Manage

Mike

Hi,

We use Windows 2000 server to distribute group policy's through AD to our
Mixed XP/2000 clients.

Ever since doing so we have been unable to manage Windows XP machines
remotely. (i.e. compmgmt.msc, Action, Connect to another computer...)

We can connect OK. However;
Event Viewer: Access Denied
Shared Folders: OK
Local Users and Group: Access Denied
Device Manager: Access Denied..
and so on.

I am a member of AD Domain Admins. Domain Admins are members of the local
Administrator group of the PC to which I am connecting.
I believe it is related to Registry Key permission. We have loaded the
Windows XP AD Templates.

Can anyone please define what is needed (permissions, on what) to be able to
manage remote XP machines

NB: Service Pack 1, 2. yields same results.

Best Wishes,
Mike

Mike, check your AD's DNS. You probably have multiple A records with the
same IP's.

COMPUTER01 - 10.0.0.5
COMPUTER02 - 10.0.0.5

When in reality, your DHCP is probably correct, like:

COMPUTER01 - 10.0.0.6
COMPUTER02 - 10.0.0.5

If you try to remotely manage an XP system via name from the AD Users and
Computers tool, and DNS directs you to the wrong IP, based on DNS...you see
exactly what you describe.

Hope that helps,
