windows xp - Remote desktop

Hi All ,

Iam using Windows Xp professional V5.1. I have problems with remote desktop
intsallation, used to operate my office computer from my home or remote place.

Problem:

I can communicate from the remote/another PC to the host PC in the same LAN.
But from another place or home, I cannot communicate to the host PC in my
office.

What I have tried:

I have checked
http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/RemoteDesktopSetupandTroubleshooting.html notes. Accordigly I checked everything and found the problem.

The problem:

When I port querry 3389 using my public IP, I found that the computer is not
listening. When I use my LAN ip, it is listening.

What I need:

1.Can anyone confirm that Singnet or starhub (singapore) surely blocked
these ports or anyone was successfull.

2. There is a procedure to reconfigure the remote desktop to another
port.eg:port 80, port 23,port 110 etc. My computer public IP is listening to
these ports. If I choose to change which port should I try?

3. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks and Regards

You have done a good job of troubleshooting, but the problem may not be what
you are thinking. I'm not aware of any ISP which blocks port 3389, TCP, but
it isn't beyond the realm of possibility.

The question for me is: How does your work network connect to the
Internet--what devices and software are involved? Most likely, port 3389
(or some other port--you can change this on the work desktop machine)--will
need to be opened in whatever device provides the Internet connection, and
unsolicted traffic on that port forwarded to your desktop machine.

Even if you know what ports are open outbound from the work setting, the
issue is having inbound traffic forwarded to your machine, as opposed to
some other machine on the network.

I've no idea how big a network we are speaking of, nor of how likely it is
that you are able to make changes to it.

Thanks for your reply.

That was the same doubt I had, but since not experienced I wanted help. Our
office network is with 20 clients and a server and we connect to the internet
through an external firewall. I had instructed to switch off, which they have
confirmed they did. But today Iam calling the network personnel to show me
the setting and check if ther is any way of enabling port 3389. If I still
have difficulties I shall reply you.

The firewall will need to be set to forward unsolicited inbound traffic on
port 3389, TCP to the IP address of your office workstation. This should be
possible, but the details of how to make the setting vary with different
equipment and software, and I'm only familiar with a very small subset of
such devices.
