Windows XP reinstallation problems

A program asked me to reinstall windows, but when I did it
froze in the middle of installation. Now when I start to
reinstall I get a lot of error messages and it stops.
Otherwish I get a DOS system prompt with no access to the
other drives. I originally installed Windows XP over
Windows 98. Any suggestions?
