Windows XP Registry Error / Viruses

I am attempting to save a corrupted Windows XP system
which is infected with viruses. I cannot load the Windows
desktop or boot the computer in safe mode.

When I attempt to bring up the desktop, the screen turns
blue and I receive a windows error message
stating "registry-error" with the following registry
strings:

0x00000051
0x00000003
0xe1scd00
0xe1108000

I also cannot run Windows repair from the Windows boot
disk. When I attempt to repair I follow the steps, choose
the proper directory (1) and hit "enter" - the computer
then switches to the blue screen with the "registry
error" message stated above.

Last Known Good does not load, Safe Mode does not load.

Any suggestions on how to begin to tackle this would be
much appreciated. Also, how can I stop the computer from
loading Windows and make it load up in DOS mode?

If possible, I would like to save this system from having
to be rewritten, I'm willing to do whatever needs to be
done.
