Windows XP rebuild problem

I am running windows XP home edition with SP 2 installed from Microsoft CD

Windows was preinstalled on the hard drive by Time Computers PLC (now gone
bust! So I don't have a separate XP instal disk

Due to system instability I have had to rebuild the machine and restore all
the factory defaults. I have reinstalled everything without problems apart
from my Broadband USB connection software with Wanadoo (now Orange)

When I try and install the connection software Windows responds with the
message

“Windows 2000 drivers have encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience"

Thats it - dead end.I've tried everything I can think of without success.
Orange say its clearly a windows problem and needs a windows solution.

This was a suprise because I wasnt expecting a Windows 2000 error and I have
rebuilt this machine in the past with no problems

Has anyone got any ideas how I can fix this problem or work around it?

Thanks

Hi

Can you try an Ethernet cable instead of a USB one?

Don't think that would help as the broadband CD connection software needs to
be run before any connections are made. Basically when I run the instal CD it
allocates a default file location and then just stops with the Windows 2000
error message. At this point nothing is required to be connected to the PC
either by USB or ethernet. These connections are made only after the instal
CD has run.

I think I need to analyse this driver error first.

Thanks

Hi

I've the option here of using either cable, but have found that the USB one
is less stable than the Ethernet one.
