Out of the blue I start up my AMD 2000 XP computer with
Windows XP Porofessional and it retarts continually while
the Logo screen is present.

Can you get it to start up okay in Safe Mode?

To start Windows XP in Safe Mode turn the computer on and start
tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon as the first information of
any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping rapidly until the Windows
XP Startup Menu appears and then choose Safe Mode from the menu.

If the computer starts up okay in Safe Mode then launch System Restore
from the Accessories - System Tools menu. Choose the option to
restore your computer to an earlier time and select the most recent
restore point that is prior to the onset of the problem.

If that does not resolve the issue then start the computer again in
Safe Mode and this time open Control Panel - System - Advanced and
click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom)
section. In the Startup and Recovery Window click on the checkbox for
"automatically restart" to clear it. Click on Apply and Okay as
needed to exit. Shut down and restart normally. The rebooting should
no longer occur but it may be replaced by a "Blue Screen Of Death"
STOP error and the computer may then lock up requiring a manual power
off and restart. If this does happen then the complete text of the
STOP error message, including all of the parameters, will be a direct
clue as to the cause of your problems. Post that information back
here if you need help with it.

And if it is not possible to start the computer in Safe Mode then try
choosing the "last know good configuration" from the Startup Menu.
And if that also fails then your next option is likely a Repair
Install as per the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm This will preserve
your user data files, installed applications, and program
configuration settings. Windows Updates will all have to be
reinstalled and your computer may be vulnerable to infection by
Blaster or Sasser if you do not have a firewall in place.

Good luck

Rich, my Compaq Laptop got the "re-boot" disease - like a bad cough - just
re-booting and re-booting.... this seems to be associated with a non-critical
hardware update: ATI Mobility Radeon display software update.
The "F8" Key and Safe mode worked fine. Luckly I solved my System Restore
problem (connection to SP2??) just hours ago and created a couple of restore
points!!
