windows xp professional installation

I am trying to upgrade to windows xp professional from
windows 98 SE and get a message stating that I cannot
procede because I have two operating systems installed. I
only have one operating system installed.

Apparently, you acquired an "OEM version" of Windows XP Pro.
OEM versions are not designed to upgrade an existing Windows
installation. It must be installed on a reformatted drive.
Only "retail versions" of Windows XP have the ability to upgrade.

I don't think this is the problem - I bought it from Best
Buys for $199 and they won't take it back.
