Hello all,

I got this realy big problem:
I do not have much order in my cd's, that way i probably
lost my windows xp prof dutch edition cd, however I still
have the book with the serial on it!
SDo I asked some questions to people if it was legal to use
a kopied winbdows with my legal serial, and they said it
was since we don't pay for the cd but for the license...
Now I koppied a freinds win xp key today so that i could
install it again on my pc, now after formatting an error
occured, whenever i enter my LEGAL serial, not my friends,
it sais I use a bad serial, now is there a way to gain a
new working cd key?
The version i koppied is the same, only my cd key was for
2cpu's and my friends cd is for 1 cpu

So get a copy of one for 2cpus.. if there is such a thing.. somehow it doesn't
seem logical to assume that microsoft puts out disks specifically for the number
of cpus a generic user would have when they buy windows.. they have home, pro,
and corporate.. but cpus? doesn't sound cost effective..

Product Keys are generally interchangeable with CDs of the same type but
can't cross versions.
The three types are
OEM
Retail (including Full and Upgrade)
Volume Licence

there are 2 versions - Professional and Home. So if your Product Key is for
an OEM version of XP Home then it should work with most OEM Home versions.
If your Product Key is for an OEM version of XP Home it will not work with a
Retail version of XP Home.

The 1 cpu vs 2 cpu versions you mention are unknown to me.

Harry,

You missed something - Home vs Pro. He copied a *Home* disc and is trying to
install using a *Pro* key - that isn't going to work either.

I don't think Harry missed anything unless there are
more than two versions of Win XP (ie Home and Pro).

Erm, isn't that what I just said?!

The home version supports only one CPU. PRO supports multiple CPU's

Incorrect. Pro supports *TWO* CPUs, not multiple. Any more than two and
Windows 2003 server is required for full support (AFAIK).
