Windows XP problems

All of my applications are laggy. I click on them, and it takes over a minute
to load them. The, when it does, especially Opera, I get odd error messages.
I have a 1MB prescott P4 with 512 RAM, and when I open applications, the CPU
bareley crests 10%, and even then, it's only for a second or two.
 
1. Scan for adware with Spybot Search and Destroy or Adaware. Be sure to
download the latest definition files.
2. Disk Defrag.
3. Virus Scan.
4. If on network: go to my network places and delete all entries.
5. Disable all unnecessary startup items in MSCONFIG.
