windows XP Pro vs MS Word 97

Just yesterday I installed the recommended patches for
XP. After rebooting, I now have a problem with MS Word
97. The problem is associated with the "open" function.
Tyring to browse through the C drive's folders to identify
the needed document, the "Open" window vanishes before I
find the document.

I have run the virus checker; all's well.
I have scanned and defragmented; all's fine.
I have rebooted and then reinstalled MS Office 97,
rebooted, and still the problem persists.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

What about running a Trojan horse or worm scanner?

Thanks for your attempt to help, Adrian. We have, and we
use AdWare. This isn't a virus problem, it's a conflict
issue.
