Since the last round of automatic updates, my Dell 8300 has real difficulty
in shutting down. It hangs up forever and one time, after one hour, I just
pulled the plug.

Where do I start?

Thanks in advance
Matt

If you experience slow logoff (with Saving your settings for most of the
time while logging off), you are having profile unload problems.

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe will run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

Since the last round of Windows updates I've repaired two computers that locked up after installing the updates. I ended up running a repair from the Windows OS cd in both cases with success and no loss of data. Both of the computers were corrupted with adware and spyware before the updates were installed.

Funny how malware will mess things up.

Well Folks & especailly Wesley Vogel

I managed to stumble through downloading and installing UPHClean.

I'm an engineer, not a computer aficionado, so I'm never certain about what
I'm doing on my electronic marvel.

BUT, this whole deal worked very well indeed. Wesley's diagnosis was
correct and now, I don't have to sit and cuss my computer, in three
languages, to encourage it to shut down.

I'm slightly worried about accruing so many UPHClean log files that they
stack up in the electronic marvel's closet, though. Might that be a
problem? Or is the second coming of Jesus more likely?

Thanks again, Wes...

Interesting app.,Wes Vogel. It gets my curiosity going. I have a 15 month old Dell 8400. It shuts down in no time. So what is it that starts bogging things down? Is there anything in your UPHClean log file that would aid in taking measures in preventing of this type of headache?

I'm having similar problems with a shutdown plus I am unable to logon. I keep
getting Event 1500 errors. I am only able to logon using Safe mode thus
unable to use UPHClean service since it won't run in Safe Mode. Any
suggestions?

Thanks

A.M.,

Make sure that CALLSTACK_LOG & REPORT_ONLY are set to 0 NOT 1.

[[Logging the call stack is computationally and memory intensive. You
should use
this option to collect information and then turn it off. ]]

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\UPHClean\Parameters

Value Name: CALLSTACK_LOG
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0

Value Name: REPORT_ONLY
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0

Also make sure that CLOSEHANDLE_LOG, HIVE_PENDINGUNLOAD_LOG,
HIVE_STATUS_LOG, HIVE_TOUNLOAD_LOG, HIVEUNLOAD_LOG and INIT_LOG are all set
to 0 NOT 1 in the following key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\UPHClean\Diagnostics

I have no idea why any would be set to 1.

I never bothered to even look. I do not care what was causing the slow
shutdown, UPHClean fixes it.

If you want you can log only.

See: WHY SHOULD I USE UPHCLEAN?

John,

UPHClean v1.6d readme.txt
http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/8/7/a87b3d05-cd04-4743-a23b-b16645e075ac/readme.txt

mentions Userenv/1500 problems:
[[Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check
that you
are connected to the network, or that your network is functioning correctly.
If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

This last error (1500) is relevant if you find one of the other ones earlier
in
the application log.]]

It doesn't specifically mention this, but if stuck in Safe Mode, I think you
can still manually install uphclean.

Here are the manual install instructions...

[[To manually install it (you need a copy of uphclean.exe):

- Create a directory under Program Files for the service
(e.g. c:\program files\uphclean)
- Copy the program (uphclean.exe) to the directory
(e.g. c:\program files\uphclean\uphclean.exe)
- Open a command prompt on the computer
- Change directory where you copied the program
(e.g cd \program files\uphclean)
- Run the program with the -install switch to install the service and start
it
(e.g. uphclean -install)

The service is set to automatically start when the computer boots so you
will
not need to start it manually. ]]
