Windows XP Pro on Windows 2000 network can't see other machines

We have a network with all Windows 2000 Pro and Windows
2000 Server machines. Most 2000 Pro machine were upgraded
from 98.
We are introducing the first Windows XP Pro machine to
the network. This machine can not see any other machines
from Explorer and non of the other machines can see this
one through Explorer. Ping works to and from the XP
machine.
XP Pro is a default install no firewall activated.
No domain just a workgroup named WORKGROUP.

Do the 2000 machines have to log onto a domain if so you
need to join the XP machine to the domain. Do you know if
one of the W2K servers is a domain controller? or is your
whole network setup peer to peer.
