Windows XP Pro cannot see Windows 2000 computer in workgroup

I have a small workgroup setup of Windows 2000 pro and Windows XP machines.
Everything seems to be fine except for one of the Windows XP SP2 machines
cannot see a particular Windows 2000 professional machine in the workgroup.

The 2000 machine can see and browse to the XP machine fine, but the XP
machine cannot see it at all. The XP machine can also see all of the other
computers in the workgroup with no problem. The XP machine can ping the
computer successefully by ip address and computer name as well, but it is
unsuccessful if you try and browse to it by computer name.

I have taken these steps to try and resolve the problem. Enabled NetBios
over TCP/IP and made sure the computer browser service is started.

I appreciate any suggestions that anyone may have.

1. Make sure you've turned off Simple Sharing on the XP box (Folder
Options).

2. Make sure you've allowed the lan as a trusted exception in the
Windows Firewall (or configured a third-party firewall properly).

3. Make sure you've created a user account with a password (not null)
and then created the identical account/password on the Win2k box.

Thanks for info, but I verified all of those settings with my current
setttings and they are all correct. Do you have any other suggestions to
correct this problem?

Thanks

You can try MVP Hans-Georg Michna's troubleshooter. It usually will
pinpoint the problem.

Another thing to think about is when you say the XP box can't see the 2k
box, do you mean in Network Places? Can you find the 2k box by using
the Search for computer on a network function on XP? If so, just make a
shortcut to desired resources and forget about Network Places. I (and
others whom I respect) find Network Places problematic.

If you can't even find the 2k box by searching for its name, then I'd
give another look at any firewall configuration on the 2k box. Perhaps
you don't have a full IP range allowed or are using a router with not
enough IP's or the like.

Thanks for the additional suggestions. Actually as one last effort I
installed Netbui on the XP machine and everything seems to be working fine
now.
