Hi, I have Win XP Pro OEM on a PC I bought from a reseller that has now gone
bust, I need to replace a faulty motherboard and CPU. Can I do this without
having to buy a new copy of XP?

If it's a generic OEM, yes. If it's been over 120 days since the last
hardware change, you will be able to activate online. Otherwise, you'll
have to make a phone call. Tell them you reninstalled and the activation
notice came up. You need not give them any more information than that
and the 50 digit number.

If you have a "generic" OEM version of Windows XP, you are
entitled to replace a defective motherboard and reactivate,
although you may have to "activate by phone" if internet
activation is not successful.
