have an xp pro machine sp2 that i'm trying to join to domain. when i go to
the computer name tab and click on change to get to the change computer name
tab, the member of section shows workgroup as mshome as if the machine were a
xp home machine, and the option to change to domain is grayed out. hate to
have to rebuild os to fix, but i can't find info on this problem anywhere.

Are you connected to the domain when trying to join it? Are you logged
on as a local administrator? Was the computer ever a member of a domain
before?

The more details you give, the more help you can get.

Yes, I am connected to the network where the domain exists, and other
machines in the lab can join. Yes I am logged on using the local
administrator account. The machine was previously connected to netware
account, and the netware client has been uninstalled. The machine has never
been connected to a windows domain. The machine lists the workgroup as
mshome as if it were a xp home computer but definately is a pro install. the
option to change to domain is grayed out as if it were a xp home machine.
thanks for any help

1. Check the workstation's DNS. It should only look to the server for
DNS.

2. Make sure the Client for Netware is completely uninstalled and there
are no traces left.

3. Possible Group Policy in effect?

The workgroup name "MSHOME" does not refer to XP Home Edition - it is the
default name for the group regardless of the computers comprising the group.

Hi,

I've had something similar in the past and reinstalling the "F&P sharing for
Microsoft Networks" services in the LAN properties did the trick.

I don't believe that is true. The default workgroup when xp pro is installed
is workgroup.

But the Network Setup Wizard uses a default of MSHOME.

ok.. i didn't know that. perhaps if i delete the network connection and
start over i can avoid the rebuild.
