XP/Pro: Cannot join domain or change workgroup!

Hi, all! Never seen this before. Box is XP/Pro, SP2, latest patches and
such. Logged in as Administrator.

Went into System applet in Control Panel, then Computer Name tab to join a
machine to the domain, and both Workgroup and Domain options in the "Member
of" frameset are greyed out! The Network ID button is also greyed out...

Never seen this before!! Suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is your account does not have administrator
priveleges. You said you logged in as the administrator. Is that the actual
"administrator" or just an account with admin priveleges?

To verify it's a system wide permissions issue, try to do something else
that requires admin rights, like changing the TCP/IP settings of one of your
network adapters.
