Windows XP Pro locking up, especially IE

My computer has been getting progressively slower at times over the last few
weeks. It's a 2.53 Gig Pentium 4 with 1 Gig of Ram that I built myself. I
have not installed anything new on it in the past few months. Anyway, it
seems as if something is just hogging all of my resources the longer the
computer is running. Then internet explorer just won't open. I click on it
and the hourglass shows up and then nothing happens. It never opens.
Everything else on the computer works as far as I can tell (Outlook Express,
Norton, etc.). The only way I can get Internet Explorer to work is to
restart my computer. Then more fun starts. The computer won't restart on
its own. It always has a few messages about ending programs. The first one
that comes up and it comes up everytime is iexplore.exe. Then fairly often
both explorer.exe and ccApp.exe come up in the end program screen. I have
tried waiting for Windows to close them and clicked 'end now' but it rarely
works. When it does actually work, windows will shut down, my monitor will
go blank and the little power light on the monitor flashes as if it isn't
getting a signal from the cpu, but the computer hardware keeps running (i.e.
the power supply fan stays on). Then I have to just flip the switch on the
power supply before I can restart it. Sometimes I can just hit the reset
button on the front of the tower to restart to avoid that whole mess.

My computer is running Norton Internet Security. I keep it and Windows
fully updated. I also use SpyBot and AdAware, but AdAware has been locking
up lately as well while it is scanning. Once again, everything else seems to
be working at that time (except for IE of course). I used to just keep my
computer running all the time since I'm a college student and I use it quite
often. I would just turn it off on the weekend when I went home. But, now I
have to restart several times a day.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this may be happening? Please
let me know if you need any more info. about my system. Thanks for the help!

Download and run Process Explorer. This will tell you exactly what is
eating the CPU cycles.

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

You should also clear out temporary files.

I cleared the temporary files as I usually do on a regular basis. I also
downloaded Process Explorer, but nothing seems to be hogging my resources
according to it. The computer doesn't always run slow, just when things
start locking up. However, I am still having the same problems described
above. Any other thoughts?

And that's the time to look at Process Explorer. Have it running with
View Process Tree enabled, then run the things that slow it down. Have the
apps arranged so that you can see the Process tree, and pay close attention
to the CPU column with numbers.

This might be related to the post I've just made under:

group: microsoft.public.windowsupdate
"Slow boot times, slow system after latest updates."

I've listed similar issues in that post relating to recent MS Updates.
