As long as it's the same CD, retail, OEM, full, upgrade, and so on, it will
install and activate just as it would with your original CD.

Yes - as long as it's the same type of CD as yours was....

If the sticker says ' Certificate of Authentication " is is "white", the
version is OEM. I believe the the Retail version is/was orange and the Volume
License does not have a sticker. Volume License keys come on a spearate
sheet, either as an email or a certifucate.

You can use another CD with your license (product key) provided the
new CD matches your original one with respect to:

- Edition (Home, Pro, Media Center, Tablet PC)
- Version (Retail Upgrade, OEM, Retail Full Install, Volume License,
etc)
- Language

To determine if your installed Windows XP is an OEM version open
Control Panel - System - General and look at the 20 character Product
I.D. reported as the last line in the "Licensed to:" section.

Note that this Product I.D. is not the same as the 25 character
Product Key used to install Windows XP.

If the second segement (3 characters) of the Product I.D. reads OEM
then your installed Windows XP is an OEM version and you probably need
to contact the computer manufacturer/assembler to get a replacement
CD. If the second segment is a 3 digit number then your installed
Windows XP is either a retail or volume licensed version and you can
get a replacement CD from Microsoft using the link provided in one of
the other responses.

Good luck

It may also say "OEM Product" on it.

I know this is an extremely old thread. But I just wanted to add that my Windows XP Professional CD also exploded in my drive. This happened a couple of years ago. I remember reinstalling it on my computer, then suddenly I heard a really loud POP. It was a sound that I never would have guessed would be a cd exploding. It almost sounded like a capacitor blew. So I opened up the side of my computer, looked everywhere, and couldn't find anything.

Then I saw the front of my cd/dvd drive. The entire front plastic face was bulging outward. It wouldn't open, so I had to pry it open with a screw driver. All I saw inside was extremely small pieces of what was left of my cd.

I personally believe that I was extremely lucky. I sit right in front of where my drive is. And the way it was bulging outward, it looked as though it was almost about to spew those sharp fragments at my face.
