Of course. You can uninstall any operating system and install
another one cleanly.

You can also upgrade XP Home to XP Professional.

Ken,
Could I uninstall XP(Home edn) and install W2k(Pro) instead ?
Is it possible without reformatting the HD ?

If your OS is on a separate partition to your data, then you just format the
partition. If not, then 'fraid not, you would have to format the whole HDD
AFAIK.....

There is no uninstall of xp home. To uninstall it you have to
format.(uninstall is only a option when xp was installed as an upgrade
install, and then it only goes back to what you had before). To goto any
other windows version other than xp pro (and possibly win2k03 server) from
xp home, you have to format.

You know, Gordon, this has been on my mind for years but I have always
hesitated to ask. Why do computer manufacturers and most custom
builders insist on providing big HD's and then installing the OS on the
entire blooming thing as C:. My guess is that most of us here use a
separate partition for data and maybe even more than one for other
things.

Now that that is off my chest, it can be ignored.

I think that is one of the things you learn by experience, from
re-formatting and re-installing Windows at regular intervals!

There's no need to uninstall XP Home. Just stick the XP Pro CD (either
full or upgrade version) in the drive and choose an upgrade install.
Your system will be transformed into XP Pro, no programs or data will
be lost.

An oem doesn't partition the drive because most users who would buy an oem
computer don't even know that you can do that or what a partition is.
Usually someone doing advanced disk partitioning is going to build their own
computer. (of course not all, but I would think in general, advanced users
are smart enough to not buy oem). And a true custom builder (high end
custom), will ask the customer how they want the drive partitioned.
