Windows XP Pro hangs on black screen prior to logo

I'm running Windows XP Pro and using Norton SystemWorks 2004 for my
antivirus software (updated every other day). I haven' had problems
until recently. I did a full system scan for viruses and found none. I
then ran SystemWorks' one button checkup utility and had it repair a
few problems automatically. Immediately after rebooting, the PC hung
indefinitely on the black screen which normally appears immediately
prior to the Windows logo. I tried to use my XP install disks to
attempt a repair, but I again hang on a black screen after I "press
any key" to boot from the XP disk. Safe mode is not accessible for me
either. My system correctly identifies my hard drives, so I don't
believe it's a hardware issue. I just can't get beyond the black
screen appearing prior to the Windows logo. Any thoughts or
suggestions?

Thanks
Mark
