Black screen after WinXp logo screen

Hello all,

I'm having a boot up problem that I don't even know how to begin to tackle.
The computer is working fine. I have not done any hardware/software/driver
changes since I setup the system a couple of months ago. The motherboard is
Asus. M2N-SLI.

Symptom: Turn the power ON, POST fine, I get to the windows boot up screen
with window logo, stays there for normal amout of time, then the screen
completely turns black and hangs. I can not even boot into safe mode.

On Saturday, I used the computer in the morning, went out for lunch, when I
came back, I saw a message I remember saying "Disk boot failure: insert
system disk and press enter". After restarting the computer and going into
BIOS, I found that all of my SATA drives had dissappeared. After opening the
box to make sure all connections were tight, I restarted the computer. My
SATA devices came back, but I now get a black screen after the boot up screen
with WinXP logo. Due to the fact that all my SATA drives just disappeared, I
have the feeling that this might be related to motherboard, but I don't know
if a mobo could just die without any warning.

I had not reinstall/repair using the winxp cd, for I did not have the chance
to make any backup copies of the files on my hard drive.

I would really appriciate if someone could offer me some troubleshooting
tips on this bizzare problem.

I don't have a solution but just want to tell you that the same thing
happened to me a month ago. I tried the whole day to boot the Computer but
was unsuccessful and the next day, it booted with a chkdsk screen and my pc
is running fine till now

That is the part of the boot sequence where it is looking for drivers
for the hardware it has detected. Try disconnecting all peripherals
and pull all cards except memory & video card, then you should get a
clean boot. Then start reconnecting cards & peripherals one at a time,
booting up after each one until you see which one is causing the hangup.
