Windows XP Pro freezes

I have used Win XP pro for about a year with no
problems. Today my computer started freezing up for no
apparent reason. The mouse was frozen. ctrl+alt+del did
not respond. So I had to reboot. It has happened 4
times today. Any ideas on where to start, as I don't
have a clue?
 
A few days ago I installed AVG 7.0 antivirus software.
Had been using AVG 6.0. No hardward changes. No other
software changes.
