Windows XP Pro freezes during virus scan

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 tower computer. My computer has started freezing
when I do my virus scan. I have AVG71free_405a791. I uninstalled it and
reinstalled it. Same problem. It freezes at: C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Themes11\Expeditn\*.*.

After it freezes and I restart I am told to send a message to Microsoft
regarding the error. I get the following message:

Product no longer supported: contact manufacturer
Thank you for submitting an error report.
Problem description
The error was likely caused by:
Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys)
Recommendations
Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys) was created by Intel® Corporation. This
product is no longer supported by the manufacturer. For more information see
the Intel® Corporation website at Intel® Corporation

I went to the Intel site but all they tell me is that they no longer support
it.

I have also used the Dell Dimension Resource CD and tested the hard drive,
the System memory and the virtual memory and these are fine.

I also performed the following steps:

2. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Under Performance, click Settings.
5. Click the Advanced tab.
6. Under Virtual Memory, click Change.
7. Click No paging file. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK.
8. Restart your computer.
9. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
10. Click the Advanced tab.
11. Under Performance, click Settings.
12. Click the Advanced tab.
13. Under Virtual Memory, click Change.
14. Click System managed sized. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK.
15. Restart your computer.

Any help is much appreciated. The computer freezes only when I do the virus
scan.

Mary -
Does your system perform well aside from the virus scanning? If so, I would
contact AVG tech support, or uninstall and find another virus protection
program. I was a Norton user for many years, but uninstalled as it took a lot
of system resources. I tried Trend Micro and AVG (stalled scans) and they
didn't like my system. I finally settled with ZoneAlarm Internet Security
Suite. All is well, and I have AV, AntiSpam, Spyware, and Firewall all in one
small system resource use. I also use AdAware, it's FREE, program from time
to time.

Several options here:
1. Tell AVG to not scan that folder.
2. Contact AVG tech support
3. Try a different free anti-virus such as Avast or AntiVir

Manually update AVG and try running a full system scan in Safe Mode. Make
certain you have Definitions dated 21 Sept-06 or later and version
268.12.7/454 or higher.

I worked through the many solutions that were presented to me:
- doing the virus scan from Safe Mode
- trying an online virus scan
The solution came with uninstalling the Intel Application Accelerator. Once
this was done, I checked for updates with Microsoft Update to ensure that all
of the drivers were all right. I was then able to run my virus scan. I
discovered I had a few problems and dealt with them.

I am very grateful to all of you who helped me.

Mary, I'm glad your problem is resolved, and thanks for posting back the
resolution.

For future reference don't ever get hardware driver updates from Microsoft /
Windows Update (unless it's a Microsoft hardware device). Also only update
drivers if there is a problem or the new driver has some must have feature,
otherwise if it's working ok leave it be.

If you need a new driver go to the device manufacturer's web site if it's a
retail device, from the computer OEM's website if it's a large OEM like
Dell, or from the motherboard manufacturer's web site if it's an on board
device.
