Windows XP Pro dim bootup screen

Hello,

I have been having a problem with a Windows XP Pro workstation. About
one or two times out of 10 this computer will freeze on the Windows XP
logo screen (the screen where the bar moves across the screen as
Windows loads). The screen will also be VERY dim. My graphics adapter
is an Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 AGP card with the newest drivers (I
think...from 05/14/2004).

I tested the memory with Memtest 86+ and all memory tests pass.

What could be causing this problem of WinXP freezing/dimming on bootup?
Thanks
Mike McWhinney

Try booting in safe mode and see if the same thing occurs. When in
safe mode, only the necessary drivers to make Windows work will be
loaded. That should eliminate any hardware driver problems including
video if that is what's causing the freeze up.

From your description it appears to a video problem of sort. Could be
driver related or the video adaptor itself may be failing.
