Windows XP Pro Boot delay after using a password recovery utility/app

I recently had to recover a lost password. I found a utility that
allowed me to run/boot from a floppy and change the password. I
believe this was a small Linux utility. Sadly, I do not remember the
name of the tool. It worked, but I did have to run it a couple of
times. I believe I may have quit improperly during one of the attempts
and this may be causing my problem now? But, the propblem is the
computer now takes 5 min. or so to boot into XP. I get all the way
through past the log in splash screen. Once I log in and the splash
goes away, it goes to a blank screen and it just hangs there for
around 5 min. or so. The Hard drive light is pegged and it's as if
it's scanning my whole H.D. Before it will start up.
I have formatted and restored my system with no luck on fixing this
long boot time. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!

My thought is you "didn't" format, and do a clean install. If you did this
problem would not be held over in the new install. You performed a repair
install which, you have found out, does not repair all problems!

.
some thing to think about
may be the Linux utility has changed your MBR (Master
Boot Record) like a virus can
with XP you can use the recovery console to rewrite a new
standard MBR
reinstalling XP will not clean out your MBR even if you
have f/disked and formated
I may be way off but who knows (just trying to help)
