Windows XP Picture Viewer Freezes! PLEASE HELP! GOING INSANE!

Hi everyone
Every time I attempt to view a JPG, TIFF, ICO, GIF, JPEG,
BMP or other type picture or image with the Windows
XP Picture & Fax Viewer, my computer FREEZES,
the mouse FREEZES and the only way to recover is to RESET because
CTRL-ALT-DEL will not work to unlock the freeze
i have Windows XP Professional with ALL latest updates and service pack
2 etc
i have a Pentium 4 porcessor 2.4ghz
1536MB of Ram
i have the 128 MB AGP Nvidia Gforce 5200 graphics card
as i said it only freezes when you have viewed at last 5 or more
pictures on the picture viewer itself...

i dont want to go and pay more money for a new graphics card, as PC
WORLD said once i open it, i cannot return it, UNLESS the actual card
is Faulty, so if if it still freezes with the new card, im knackered!
anyone have any ideas to my problem?
do you ALL think its the graphics card?
i was going to go out and buy the ATI Radeon 9500 graphics card, which
is AGP with 256MB

HELP PLEASE - im about to launch the PC out of the window
this has been happening for over 7 months now, VERY annoying
Microsoft, can you help ?

Oh yeah, forgot to say, i have updated the drivers from NVIDIA website
and its still freezing!
Have also updated the BIOS aswell, and guess what? yep, still freezing
:-(

I would blame one of those recent Windows Critical Updates that disables the XP
Picture & Fax viewer.
There is a fix for that, but it is quite involved and has been mentioned here
before a couple of times. I would avoid that update, but it seems to be too late
for you already.

Would going to www.irfanview.com and downloading their free program be a good
enough substitute?

OK - after 7 months i think i have solved the problem

Picture Viewer hasn`t frozen at all today!
first time in 7 months!!!

what i did was to go to the desktop
right click on PROPERTIES
then settings, then go to advanced
then i went to troubleshooting
i then took the hardware acceleration down 1 tiny notch to the left
hey presto!! NO MORE FREEZING, i hope!
i have tryed picture viewer today about 20 times, and its fine
what have i actually done by doing what i did??????

hopw thats helped some of you
if it starts freezing again, im off to buy a new PC!
i have had this one for over 4 and half years now anyway
about time i got a sooper doop Pentium 4 with 3.8ghz and 4 meg of Ram
