Hi Cindy, you don't exactly give much detail so my answers are a bit vague

Some links for Windows Updates that may or may not be of assistance. At the end
I've listed some common Outlook Express error messages and a possible solution.

Why can’t I download updates?

This behavior can occur if the Folders.dbx file is missing, damaged, or using
the read-only attribute.

RESOLUTION
Rename the Folders.dbx file:
1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
2. In the Named box, type folders.dbx.
3. In the Look In box, click your primary hard disk (usually drive C), and then
click Find Now.
4. Right-click the Folders.dbx file, and then click Rename.
5. Type folders.old, and then click OK.
Start Outlook Express. This creates a new Folders.dbx file automatically.

Sorry, can't help you with such minimally vague information such as
"can't get my Outlook Express 6 email." There would be error messages
but you don't tell us what they are. You could turn on logging but
Earthlink should've already had you do that so they could find out what
OE was trying to do to make a connection and establish a session. You
don't even mention if you can browse but just can't do e-mail so it
could be something more basic, like a connectivity issue. I can only
guess that if you are taking HOURS to download updates from Microsoft
then you are using dial-up, but you don't mention how you connect.

Tell us what type of connection you have: dial-up, DSL, cable. Tell us
if you are using Earthlink software to do the connect (i.e., a 3rd party
dialer) or if you are using Windows' own dialer, or tell us if you have
a LAN connection.

When you poll to receive e-mails or when you try to send, tell us what
the error message is that OE displays when it fails.

Enable logging in OE and report back what the logfile has in it (only
enable a single account if you have multiple accounts since trying to
read a logfile for multiple account connects is very difficult).

You do have anti-virus software, right? And it gets updated, right?
Don't just disable its e-mail scanning but disable it altogether and
check if you can then do e-mail okay.

If you have a firewall enabled then try disabling it and check again.

"Earthlink says go buy a new update." Of WHAT?

"My friend works on computers and says lots of people are haveing
trouble with
XP and buying something won't help?? "
People have problems trying to figure out how to use a washing machine
or their remote control. If you narrow the focus then you can always
claim lots people are having problems. Apparently your "friend [that]
works on computers" decide not to help you. Reevalute that friendship.

I am having the same problem (Earthlink and XP too), but able to receive email on computer with WIN98. It happened suddenly with no explanation. Have you gotten any help?
