I'm left with one disaster called axel.dav.
All else is recovered and cleaned and I lost nothing.

I googled axel.dav and it seems quite nasty. Here's a good thread:

Do you have an HP by any chance?

It's possible, depending on how much damage was done, that you mean need
to start over again with a clean install after all.

Also, your initial post was not too clear. Need some clarification,
specifically:

"I have a computer, not mine" ... what does this mean?

In order to get the best quality advice in this newsgroup, it's best to

- make and model of PC
- specific symptoms
- what methods you used to combat viruses, spyware, etc.
- version of XP on PC (Home or Pro or MCE, Retail or OEM)
