Windows XP not able to boot

I have an HP Pavilion Media Center laptop w/WinXP...since hooking up a DSL
line I have been unable to turn on computer and get to desktop in regular or
safe mode. I getto the WinXP processing screen and it just starts rebooting
all over aain...is this a virus and if so is there a fix..HELP!!!

What happens if you (temporarily) disconnect the DSL line from the
computer?

if you have a router modem then uninstall all the DSL software as well as
removing all remnants of it from startup
 
I believe you might be having the same problem I was having, See 5/21/05
thread in the microsoft.public.windowsupdate group:
"4 security updates repeatedly cause "black screen" - requiring "Repair
install"

there were a few of the updates that caused my computer to be out of
control. Sometimes it would just keep rebooting, then, if I tried limited
installs of other patches, it would simply go to a black screen after
briefly flashing a blue screen.

Well, the only solution was to put in the WinXP CD, setup, and go through
the "Repair Install" option. (tried the "kernal32.dll" replacement approach
first, but to no avail) Basically you go down the path of installing (not
the "Recovery Console") but you get an option to detect current Windows
version and "Press 'R' to Repair" (can't recall which came first), and then
it goes through aboutg 1/2 hr process of loading some of the OS files from
the CD and basically taking a good part of your OS back to whatever SP your
CD was. It does not mess with your currently loaded programs (thankfully)
and even leaves some patches in place, but you will DEFINITELY want to make
a bee-line for Windows Update once your system is back up. MAKE SURE YOU
HAVE A FIREWALL IN PLACE FIRST - your system will be naked and with little
(patch) protection, so you need time to be able to load the updates before
Spyware/etc can get you. Having helped friends with their systems (before
convincing them to load firewalls such as Zone Alarm or BlackIce), I am
aware of how quickly one can get hit by these things - in minutes!

This worked for me, anyway. Oh, and I have tried and tried to figure out
which of the 4 remaining patches cause problems (and load the others), and
thus have had to go through this "Repair Install" process a LOT lately. My
system was most impacted by the 4/2005 patches.
