Help- can not boot laptop; need DOS command prompt

R

ROBERT RICHOLD

I have a HP Pavilion zv5200 laptop.

I can not boot it.---NO FLOPPY DRIVE

If I boot without Windows XP CD it hangs
in the Windows loading process.

It will not allow me to boot into safe mode, safe mode w/
command prompt or normal boot.

I can not boot from Windows XP CD either. The CD is good.
I checked it in two PCs. The CD/DVD drive is good also.

Anyway to get a command prompt to fix this?

- What exactly happens when you boot the machine with the WinXP CD?
- What do you expect to achieve at the Command Prompt?

If I boot with the CD I get to the point where it
says" press any key to boot from cd. So I do.
I hear the drive kick in for about 5 seconds
and I get a black screen. Nothing after that.

I am trying to reinstall windows.

My computer does not have the option to
boot from a USB drive.

I would try to boot with a different boot CD, e.g.
a Windows 98 boot CD (www.bootdisk.com).
If this does not work either then you have a BIOS
problem, which has nothing to do with Windows.
A hardware newsgroup might be able to provide
further advice.

We don't know what you are talking about, you've removed all the context
information from the post!

The header says: can not boot laptop; need DOS command prompt

If you want a DOS command prompt then boot the computer with a DOS boot
disk. But then according to the header the laptop "can not boot" so we
don't know if it can even boot past the BIOS POST...

To fix what?

that was the last thing asked on the post is what I meant if you read
the last line that is what it says, just answer that question if nothing
else

The problem is that we don't see the post that you are referring to, you
may be seeing the old post where you are posting from but on this end
posts are only kept for something like 90 days, so we don't have a clue
as to what you are talking about. Your posts are without context, to
make matters even worse you are not replying to the thread and you are
removing all previously posted pertinent information from your posts.

You are replying to a TWO YEAR OLD POST and no one knows WFT you're
referring to.

Give details of your problem or sit there forever and get no help.

gabradley,
Why can you not see that your posts are different from
everyone else's in that you do not include the original text in your reply.
Doing so helps anyone who may have a useful answer for you to see the
history and so not suggest things already tried out. In some cases, I even
have to rebuild some of it - if people leave it out - so that the next
poster has some clue as to what's going on!
