windows xp networking

i wonder why my windows xp only pulls 169..... ip address when i remove it from my linksys router and plug it direcly to my cable modem, where it should pull either 66... or 67.. ip from cable company. but when i plug it back to the router, it pulls 192.... and works fine. what could be the problem? thanxs..
 
Your Router is acting as a dhcp server and is supplying
the IP address when the computer is connected to it. Your
ISP is providing your IP when you are connected directly
to it. Either way should work, but the router can provide
basic firewall protection, and you can connect other
computers to the internet at the same time.

Two possibilities:

1. Your cable company requires you to register the MAC address of the
computer or router that connects to the cable modem.

2. The computer's network card is failing to automatically determine
the proper speed and duplex settings for the cable modem. Try
configuring them manually, as shown here:
