hi

im trying to setup a network at home. my old comp is running xp pro sp1a.
and my new comp is working xp home sp2. im trying to run the network thru a
hub and an AOL DSL modem. Trouble is, i got the internet on the slave pc
last night and was able to access the server (the new pc), however, the
server was unable to access the slave or even recognise it.

i come down today to try and fix the problem, only to screw it up and now
neither computer is talking! all the cables are connected and the hub is on,
ive run the network wizard countless times, found my IP addresses and added
them to my firewall (Mcafee btw) and even tried disabling it (and the windows
one as well) to no joy! after practically losing all my hair and running up
and down the stairs, i throw myself at your mercy, oh windows gods who are
wiser than I!!!

after reading my novel and you can help...PLEASE help me! as my xbox isnt
online either now and i cant play halo 2!!!

Norm,

Does this tutorial describe your physical setup?
http://www.cablesense.com/sharing/soft1.php

If so, run the wizard once more on each computer. Select these options:
For the master,
- "This computer connects directly to the internet" and
- "This computer provides internet service".
For the slave,
- "This computer connects thru another computer...".

Then provide ipconfig information for each computer, which will tell us what to
look at next.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.

Hi, I just went thru a similar situation. I have a DSL modem to a NAT router
to 2 Win XP computers running Norton Firewall. After great difficulty getting
the computers to recognize each other I found that Norton Firewalls were most
of the problem but the windows firewall mysteriously turned itself on a
couple of times. I have manually configured Norton firewall and after many
reboots I'm close to perfect. Now my Nat router has hung up several times
and I don't know why. I unplug the power and plug it back in and its OK for
a while. I don't know about that.
Good Luck
Dan
