Windows XP lovely Service Pack 2 w/problems

I just installed the service pack last night and liked the idea that it had a
pop-up blocker included. Once I began using the NEW and IMPROVED, I quickly
decided I didn't like it. I chose the option of it blocking ALL pop-ups and
guess what? I have MORE pop-ups than I EVER had before. Even on websites (3
main ones I use frequently) that I NEVER had pop-ups from, are all chock full
of them. I've gone through the headache of attempting to block many of those
annoying pop-ups by blocking them in "restricted sites", but no such luck.

I would gladly go back to the "oldie but goodie" but fear further problems.
From reading other post, previous backups disappeared from the system, which
seems to be a problem for me also. Any previous backup saves are completely
gone.

Any suggestions on getting back all the old without problems/gliches? I
consider myself pretty knowledgable when it comes to the computer but I guess
I was wrong considering I figured this update was really for SECURITY issues,
when it comes down to it...it appears to be more of a partnership/sales
technique con job. Anyone with me on that?

Anyone know how to get out of this mess, and have a "secure" pc without all
the garbage included in this service pack?

Thanks, Jen

I installed XP SP2, had problems and uninstalled it.

I am still fixing things that SP2 messed up.

IMHO if you install SP2 and have few or no problems, *good* deal. If you
install SP2 and have problems and decide to uninstall it you *will* have
problems that you will have to fix after the uninstall. The uninstall
leaves a few things behind.

Inetres.adm and System.adm for example. Causes: The following entry in the
[strings] section is too long and has been truncated error when opening
gpedit.msc. MS has a fix, but restoring Inetres.adm and System.adm to an
earlier version fixes the problem.

I also had to restore my registry to a backup I made with ERUNT before the
SP2 install.

If there were no problems with SP2 there wouldn't be such a large amount of
KB articles related to SP2 already in the archives. ;-)

I haven't had any problems with pop ups after downloading SP2. I also have
Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster, Norton AV, and
firewall. I keep the security programs updated and run and am careful about
what I do on the computer. Are you sure you don't have a
spyware/malware/adware problem? jav
