I'm not able to login anymore....
I executed a malicious file downloaded from the internet....
apparently it did nothing but rebooting my pc log off immediately after log
in :-(

I'm not able to save my data because of my big NTFS partition ( 280 GB)...
cant reinstall windows xp on it without formatting....

Could you help me ? TNX

If you do not see a login screen hit CTRL-ALT-DEL twice to see if the logon
screen appears. If it does, enter Administrator as the user name with a
blank password.

I take it that you've tried the usual boot menu options such as "Last Known
Good Configuration". "Safe Mode", etc.
What about an XP repair installation. Won't overwrite your data.
HTH.

Unfortunately it doesn't solve the problem
because wsaupdater.exe does not exists... :(

See the other reply to Nick Blinow ...

I have try twice CTRL-ALT_CANC but the result is the same...
Last Known Good Configuration - Doesn't work
and
Safe Mode - Needs login too....same problem.....

I can't do the repaire installation because the harddrive is a SATA 300GB
with a NTFS partition expanded from 141GB to 300GB with Partition Magic
because XP installation disc don't see all my drive....

if i try it it want's to format my partition and if i do cancel my partition
table results corrupted !!!!!

Fortunately i have a bootable cd with a tool to repair my partition table
and now it's ok again...

but the problem remain ...
PLEASE HELP :-(

Hi Paolo,

It doesn't exist, and that's the problem, the registry entry is looking for
it. By copying the file using that name, per the article I wrote, you fool
the system.

I Did but nothing

i'm trying to use BartPE for editing the registry....but i'm not able...
i have to use another workstation.....

Could you tell me wher to look (automatic esxecution programs, services)
using only notepad wordpad or a hex editor ???

Hi,

You can't do it from a text or hex editor, you need to use a Win registry
editor if you are going to do it from another installation.

HI! I too have this problem as I suspect too to have dn a bad file and now
am in the same situation.

I tried the fix that you recomended but it does not help me either.

I also cannot boot with the safe mode with command prompt as it acts the
same way as the safe mode. ( It just brings me to the log on menu in windows
mode).

I am using XP SP2 on a PII which will boot for some reason with my cd-rom.
( I check the bios in case, its not that ).

I copied the file that you mentioned but not success.

I am going to try and re-install from bootdisks, I hope it works.

HI! I mis-spelled .I forgot the NOT in the sentence below.

I am using XP SP2 on a PII which will--- NOT-- boot for some reason with my
cd-rom.
( I check the bios in case, its not that ).

paul...

well. I got it back up by using the bootdisk and selecting repair while in
windows mode. but my norton antivirus disabled with an alert that an
internal problem has accured and that it would be disabled.

after that windows ask me to updater ask me to install new updates and then
failed to install the updates.

"Malicious software removal tool - january 2005 ( kb890830)"

hmmm. I hope its not what I am thinking. I going to try and uninstall of
norton anti-virus and then reinstall and see after .. I will get back to you
guys with this.

Well all appears to be fine now. I reinstall Norton anti-virus and the
problems seemed to have being rectified.
re-installing windows xp in windows mode under repair option worked.

I hope you succeed as well ..

good luck :)

Hi Paul,

That is a standard update offered to all users. Nothing sinister about it.
