Windows XP lockup with new hardware

I just got a computer with a brand new Asus mother board,
40 gig drive, and DVD player. When I connect my Yamaha
CDR 2100E burner/drive, Windows XP locks up on the start
up screen (when the blue line is moving back and forth, it
passes about three times and just stops). Connecting the
burner to my old windows 98 system, it works fine. My
wife's Windows 2000 system, it works fine. Without the
burner attached, the XP system works great.
What gives?

Have you checked that the jumper on the back is set for master or slave?..
if your HDD and DVD drive are on seperate IDE cables, you will have to set
the jumper to slave on the cd unit..

Some HDDs, assuming that you are installing it as a slave to the HDD,
require that the HDD jumper is set to 'master with slave'.. check this out
with the HDD makers website.. if the HDD is on IDE1 and your are attempting
to use it as slave to a DVD driveon IDE2, try making the DVD slave to the
CDRW, adjusting jumpers accordingly..
