question about sata DVD and Xp pro

I am in the process of building a new pc, using XP pro, I don't have a SATA
hd connected, but I do have a SATA DVD burner connected, I'm using Gigabyte
MB GA=P35-DS3R revision 2.1 2 gig of Ram, so far it appears all drivers have
installed for SATA and the DVD burner works as I've installed XP using it.
My question is this, this first time I booted after I install the sata
drivers for the iaAHCI ports the pc bluescreened and rebooted, and when I
look in the add/remove programs it shows the Raid software has been
installed, I also installed the Gigabyte SATA port drivers, no blue screen,
I'm assuming this is happening due to the fact that I don't have a SATA hd
connected, but don't I need these drivers for the SATA DVD burner to operate
in AHCI mode??

What am I missing??

If your sata device is connected to the sata/raid controler it need the
drivers, whether you use raid or not

Actually that's not true, it was working in IDE mode using the sata port
without drivers just fine. but in order to use AHCI mode yes the drivers have
to be installed.
What I'm wondering about is the blue screen when I tried to install the AHCI
sata drivers, I know the SATA DVD burner is showing up as using a SCSI
interface, so that tends to tell me it's recognized as SATA. currently it's
plugged into the Gigabyte Mother board port rather than the ACHI9 SATA ports.
Do I have to have a SATA HD physically installed before I install the AHCI9
drivers??
