Windows XP Locks Up

I have a folder with a small number of large files (usually 400 to 600 MB
each) in the folder. I try to edit a file name and the folder locks up.
Other programs are still running and can be accessed ok. Anything with
Windows Explorer is locked out. I usually have to use the task manager to
kill the folder that is not responding. I am running XP SP1. Sony Pentium
IV, with 512 mb memory and 120gb hard drive.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Are they perchance .avi (or other multimedia) files? WinXP has a real
problem with those, since it tries to open them and discover things
about the contents (and sometimes fails miserably). There is a fix at
Kelly's website, iirc, but I've forgotten exactly where.
