Windows XP locks up because of ACPI BIOS error.

I am running windows xp pro on a presario 5104US. My system randomly locks
up while I am using it. I am unable to do anything--the system is completely
frozen and there is no response to either the mouse or keyboard. I don't get
a "blue screen" or anything, just a complete lockup. So I have to shutdown
my computer using the power button on the CPU and then turn it back on.
After trying various option, I finally narrowed down at least part of the
problem. I noticed that in the "event viewer" for the "system", I get two
errors every time my system locks up. The errors are 1) ACPI BIOS is
attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x74), which lies in the
0x74 - 0x76 protected address range and 2) ACPI BIOS is attempting to read
from an illegal IO port address (0x75), which lies in the 0x74 - 0x76
protected address range. The event id's are 5 and 4 respectively. According
to various microsoft help articles I should update the bios for my computer.
But I have checked the Compaq support site for my system several times and
according to that site I definitely have the latest bios for my system. I
have chatted with compaq support and all they have done is suggest certain
general troubleshooting procedures for system lockups--all of which I have
tried but none of which have helped. After doing several google searches
concerning the problem I have noticed that several people have mentioned
disabling ACPI stuff in the bios settings and in windows xp device manager.
The problem with this is that my bios version does not seem to have any
settings related to acpi, power management, or PnP that I am able to change
(it is a bios version from 2001). Also, I don't really know how to disable
the acpi stuff in windows xp. I'm not even sure if disabling these settings
would be a good idea.
Anyway, I'm at the end of my rope and any assitance would be greatly
appreciated. I back up my important files all of the time now, but I am
afraid that my computer is just going to die one day and I'll need to buy a
new one (maybe this is the only solution anyways). Also, please note that I
am somewhat of a computer novice when it comes to technical issues, so clear
and detailed responses would be appreciated.
