I do have a couple of Linux-based "Live CDs" for system recovery purposes.

But this looks very interesting:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

I wonder if anybody knows about it and has tried it out. Will be glad to
hear about experiences.

Regards and thanks.

It's a well known tool that works.

Just read all the tips when you make one....a few problems if you use a
Dell XP cd some things about plugins etc. Works great though. You can
look at the files in "protected" recovery partitions on emachines,
extract what you want etc I like the UBCD4WIn better, more stuff built
in already

I was intrigued by this thread and tried it out on two Dells both with XP
SP2 (Dell OS disks). I could not get either to work. I forget exactly what
the errors were, but they were all related to problems with permissions
related to registry hives. Searching the web turned up others with the same
problem, but none of the suggestions worked. I have admin rights already
and tried booting into safe mode and logging in as admin. Same exact
problem.

I'm not sure what went wrong. Anybody ideas are welcomed.

Peter

One error was this type:

Deleting file "D:\pebuilder\BartPE\petmphive"
Error: DeleteFile() "D:\pebuilder\BartPE\petmphive" failed.

The other was this type:

Closing hive "D:\pebuilder\petmphive"
Error: closeHive failed: RegUnLoadKey
(key="PEBuilder.exe-D:/pebuilder/petmphive") returned error 0: Access is
denied.

An update to my problem. I tried the Dell XP SP1 disk (rather than SP2) and
the errors disappeared and I could boot. Don't know why.

I am now trying the UBCD4WIN plugins. Looks promising.
