Can I start again ? - bootable cd-r/multi-av

Is it possible to make an NT bootable cd, or even a dvd-r/rw, that perhaps
would even load a Windows kernel - containing the four command line
scanners, (like those included in David H Lipmans multi-av), so that a PC
can be booted to DOS / or a Windows XP Home ed. Safe mode, or Safe mode with
command prompt - and so then having access to NTFS formatted hd0, run the
a/v scanners by either copying them to hd and running them from there, or
strraight from cd-r.

I played with older versions of DOS, ntfs4dos.exe, my old W98se FAT32 based
boot up floppy and run ntfs4dos.exe and fiddled - wouldn't work.
Bootdisk.com's DOS 6.22 that's supposed to give cd-rom drive support -
didn't, and I had to use the old oakcdrom.sys driver from my W98se boot cd
to get cd-rom drive support enabled at boot up. ...all failed - the nearest
I got was Sophos's sweep.exe telling me that dos4gw.exe couldn't be found.
(that was booting up using W98se floppy - running ntfs4dos.exe - then
running Sophos's Sweep.exe with a few switches
like -all -lang-eng -me -ns -pd -rec -sc

Oh, and I tried Barts http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
but, that wouldn't work either !

...any help greatly appreciated :)

What exactly was it that did not work with your Bart PE
boot CD? And what precisely is the functionality you wish
to achieve? Access your hard disk? The Bart PE CD will
do it with ease!

Thanks, I just re-made a BartsCD and all is wonderful - booted up from it,
copied multi-av to a c:\ drive - all working I think.
Well, I pressed 1 to run the Sophos sweep and it stuck at the pint where it
wanted compare/download the latest sig. files.

Cancel all I said on this thread, BartsPE boot-cd-r disk blew up my c:\drive
, ...I won't be playing with it anymore !
....had to restore my C:\ drive from a Norton Ghost image, very luckily I
ghosted just a few days ago.

Rubbish. The Bart PE boot CD does not make any
modifications to an existing OS unless you ask it to.
Think carefully about what you did after using it to
boot your PC.

Well, on one boot up I said no to network suuport, on another I said yes and
chose DHCP and the led's on my router blinked a bit!
I looked at the Bart PE Tools menu to see what was available but, didn't use
any of them. I clicked on "run" and browsed through to c:\av-cls and ran
startmenu.bat and pressed 1 for the Sophos sweep but nothing happened - got
returned to multi-av's top menu. I tried 4 for Kaspersky and it checked the
signature files with those on its' home site and then that dropped out back
to multi-av's top menu.
On another boot up I used run | sweep.exe /? (to list the switches) in
the c:\av-cls\sophos directory, and tried running an analysis only sweep and
that wouldn't work.
So after several boot ups from using the Bart cd, and little exploration -
and then later expecting the thing to boot up in normal mode, I got, screen
top left, "ntldr missing." After replacing my c:\ root files from a Norton
backup image, (Windows / Progra~1 and other directory's were all still there
on c:\), and trying to boot normal, I got "missing hal.dll" So I guess that
multi-av and/or one of the cls's did the damage - because it's intended to
be run from XP Safe Mode - not under an alien OS !
....pretty sure that I didn't ask the Bart OS to knock out my MBR or delete
files in my c:\ root-directory.

....anyway, it's all academic - i.e. I restored my c:\ to how it was on the
7th.

You've put your finger right on it: Both Sophos and Kaspersky
are well capable of deleting files. I suspect you were dealing
with flawed installations, same as your first Bart PE CD was
flawed.
