booting the computer from a boot disk. It is not working.
Any suggestions..

When you say you fdisked the drive, did you boot it with a Win98 floppy
and then use fdisk to delete partitions? Did you create new partitions
and format the drive? The way to clean install Windows XP on your Dell
laptop is by booting with the XP cd that came with your machine. Create
partitions as needed and then install Windows XP. Did the laptop
originally come with XP installed? What does "it is not working" mean?
Please give more details about your laptop (processor speed, hard drive
size, amount of RAM) and what you actually did if you want help.

You can't do it from a boot diskette, and there was no need to
FDISK first; the installation procedure can do it for you.
Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).
