You boot from the XP CD and do a clean install.

Hmm, an 'attitude' laptop? You need to set the BIOS to boot from CD. Reboot the computer and watch the screen as it begins to boot -- you will see a line something like 'press F2 to enter setup'. The key, or several keys, to press varies from one brand to another, just watch for the instructions and do what it says. BIOS setup screens also vary, look for a description that deals with boot up sequence and change it so the CD drive is first. Now reboot with the XP Setup CD in the drive, and watch for the message "Press any key to boot from CD".

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
