Windows XP installation

Hey everyone I got a question.

My dad's computer recently got infected with a bunch of viruses which
left a lot of his dll files corrupted, well instead of doing a new
install, I just basically did a repair install of XP. Now at the
beginning it asked for the product key which I got from the side of
his computer, but now when you logon it has a icon at the bottom right
saying to activate windows BUT the key that I used from the side of
his computer doesn't get recognized. He has a dell computer and his
recovery cd was scratched from my nephew believeing it to be his
personal freesbee, I bought a copy of XP home a year ago and thought I
could just use that with his product key from his computer, I guess I
was wrong. What should I do? Do i have to buy another copy of XP? Or
do I call dell or what?

Let me see if I got this right. The current version of Windows XP
that is installed in the Dell is from the copy of XP Home that was
purchased separately, i.e., not from Dell. In this case, its Product
Key should have been used and not the COA from Dell that is attached
to the side of the case. However, this particular Product Key should
not be presently active in another computer for its use to be valid.

If the nephew had not destroyed the installation cdrom from Dell, it
is quite likely that the Dell would have self-activated. In order to
use the original COA on the father's machine, get a replacement cdrom
from Dell or get a copy of the same version and re-install with that.

The product key on the sticker attached to the computer case should work
with a generic OEM XP installation CD of the same type. So if the sticker
says it's for XP Home, then a generic OEM XP Home CD should work with it.
