3 days ago i contact microsoft from online support, and i ask them if i can
install Windows XP Home from DOS 6.2 and they tell me that installation is
imposible to make, so i am computer technician, and i know some DOS commands,
i keep trying and thinking about that installation, then finally i made it. I
would like to tell that when you don't know its better not to talk. This
microsoft technician, don't know anything about that question, so i would
like to be in his position, its a joke, but the only thing i want to tell to
everyone is that is posibble to install Windows XP from DOS 6.2

Thanks

It *cannot* be peformed from an ms-dos 6.2 boot disk...
but it actually can by using a win98 bootdisk with cd support

I have done it and here is how:

First, the HD must be formatted as fat32...
if you require NTFS the drive may be converted after the install.

Next you *must* load smartdrv.exe

so if smartdrv.exe is not already on your boot floppy
get it and copy it there.

if it's on the floppy

simply type and enter the following: smartdrv

IIRC you should see a message the smartdrv is loaded

now from within the i386 folder just run the command : winnt

and the installation will begin

Note: do not run "setup" from the dos prompt you must run : winnt

I have done that and it worked...but it was a while back

and I can't recall if I first copied the i386 folder to the HD...
but think that's the best way to do it

DOS 6.2? Is that Windows 98 DOS?

No Dos 6.2 is the "old" dos...
it does not have fat32 support.

That's why I suggested to the OP to use a win98 boot disk
as that's dos 7.1 and has fat32 support.

(Though a win95B/C or WinME bootdisk would be fine too)

Philo, the OP does not appear to be asking for help to install XP home. He
says he has actually managed to install it from within DOS 6.2 ????

Since a fat16 partition would have to be 2 gigs max...
it would be a trifle impractical...
but I guess it must be possible then.

Yes, that is possible. Once I installed XP in 2gb FAT16 partition just
for experimenting and it did.
