I have had my pc for a few years now and it's been running very slow. So I
decided to reformat my hard drive and re-install XP. Here's what I did.

Save all files I wanted to keep to cd.
Configured my Bios to boot from CD-Rom drive. Put in the Xp setup cd. I
deleted all partitions. Then choose to install xp on the unpartitioned space.
Choose to format the partition using the NTFS file system. Partition was
formatted. Then it showed.
Please wait while setup copies files to the windows installation folders.
After all files were copied it restarts.

But boots back into the xp install cd. So I went back into the Bios and
changed it to boot from hard drive. It restarts but all I get is a black
screen.

What am I doing wrong?

On the reboot when is says "Press any key to boot to CD-ROM" Don't.
Do not press a key and the computer will boot to the hard drive and
continue installing.
There is no need to change the boot order for the hard drive as first
as long as the hard drive is a boot device.
My hard drive is always 3rd after floppy and CD-ROM.

My computer does not give me that option. The only way it will boot from a cd
is if I disable booting from the hard drive in BIOS.
This is how my pc would boot up before I decided to do a clean install of
xp. When my pc boots it shows the blue BIOS screen for a couple seconds then
normally the windows xp logo would show up. The only option I have during
boot is to press F11 when the BIOS screen shows up.
My pc is an HP Pavilion 511w.

Check with HP.
The option is most likely there.
In a very few cases the message "Press any key to boot to CD-ROM" is
so brief, it does not show.
Try again tapping a key about once a second during boot.
